BRENTWOOD, NY — On March 13, 2026, the spirit of advocacy was on full display at Brentwood State Park. Staff and individuals supported by Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) joined a powerful coalition of advocates from across Long Island to stand up for the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) community.
The rally served as a vital platform to address the ongoing needs of individuals with IDD and the dedicated workforce that supports them. As the landscape of healthcare and social services continues to evolve, the message from the front lines was clear: investment and recognition are not just requests—they are necessities.
Why Advocacy Matters
Advocacy is the heartbeat of the IDD community. It ensures that the voices of those often overlooked are heard in the halls of government. This year’s rally focused on two primary pillars:
-
Securing Fair Investment: Ensuring programs have the funding required to provide high-quality, person-centered care.
-
Supporting the Workforce: Recognizing the Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) and staff whose expertise and commitment make independent living and community integration possible.
Legislative Support
The event featured several prominent guest speakers who reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the provider network. FREE would like to extend a special thank you to Senator Monica Martinez and Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio for their presence and their vocal support for the IDD community. Their leadership is crucial in navigating the legislative path toward a more sustainable and equitable support system.
“Together, our voices are stronger!”
Join the Movement
The fight for equity doesn’t end when the rally concludes. We encourage all members of the FREE family and the broader Long Island community to stay engaged. Whether it is through social media using hashtags like #InvestInUsand #SupportTheDSPWorker, or by contacting local representatives, every action counts.
When we stand together, we ensure that every individual, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to lead a fulfilling and supported life!
