Hello, my name is Christopher.

Five years ago, on my 19th birthday, I suffered a traumatic brain injury. I was hit by a car and fell into a coma for 19 days. When I woke up, doctors told my family I would probably never drive again and that it could be five to ten years until I’d be able to return to school. I see myself as a very independent person, and being put on a timeline by the doctors just gave me the motivation to exceed all expectations.

Since suffering this injury, I have done many things to help with my recovery such as Physical Therapy, Vocational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and attending a Structured Day Program that was designed to help me regain my cognitive skills.

My suffering a traumatic brain injury, and my experiences following, give me the desire to pursue a degree, and a career in psychology. My career goal is to provide people who suffer injuries like mine, as well as their families, with counseling. With a lot of effort and therapy, I was able to return to Nassau Community College two years after my injury. By the way, I drive myself there.

I’m completing an Advocacy Internship with FREE, and I have applied to continue my education at SUNY Old Westbury. I’d like to pursue either Cognitive Psychology, Counseling Psychology, and/or Approaches to Psychotherapy, as well as many other courses that the university offers.
Eventually, I’d like to apply to the Master’s program in Mental Health Counseling after I complete the Bachelor’s program in Psychology.
