Day Habilitation Islandia
Day Habilitation Islandia is committed to FREE’s mission of assisting differently-abled adults in the realization of their human potential by providing activities in work-related settings.

Program participants join small groups to make daily trips to different locations, where they develop skills, such as money management, animal care, socialization, life safety, thinking and problem-solving, reading, letter identification, and use of community resources. Consumers volunteer their time at different retail and vocational settings in order to practice using these skills in a community-based setting. Under the guidance of fully-trained staff, individuals discuss their progress and common challenges in discussion groups which take place during transport to and from each location.
DHI participants volunteer at local community settings including, Holy Cross Church, St. Johns Church, Island Nursing Home, Keep Islip Clean (KIC), Long Island Harvest, and the Woodhaven Nursing Home. Consumers also participate in community outings to increase travel skills, comparative shopping and purchasing, recycling, and literary club outings to libraries and bookstores. Consumers also have the opportunity to attend shows at Theatre Three, NY Met games, and special recreation trips to museums and aquariums.
I like coming to program because I like going out in the community. We go on rec trips and we sometimes go out for lunch. We also go to the bookstore and the library. Also we go to nursing homes, one in Medford and the other one is located in Port Jefferson Station

Many consumers attend Job Club weekly to assist in the goal of obtaining competitive employment in the community. Discussion groups and activities take place before and after daily community outings to address various topics including life and fire safety, anger management, self-advocacy, and nutrition.
